1 Timothy 6:17-19 (KJV)
17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;
18 That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;
19 Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

Paul was teaching Timothy how to be a good minister of the Lord Jesus Christ. In this passage of scripture, he is instructing him to teach those who were wealthy not to be arrogant and condescending to others. They should not depend or trust in their wealth but in the living God who is the one who blesses them to enjoy all things. It is important that they do good with what blessings they have received and share with those who are less fortunate. If they have a generous heart, then they are laying up treasures towards an eternal life. He had mentioned earlier in his letter that the love of money is the root of all evil. This wisdom has been misinterpreted to make a Christian believe that desiring wealth was a sin. He was opening Timothy’s understanding to be cautious when one has been blessed with riches because they focused only on being wealthy and it caused them to stray from the faith and brought much sorrow to their life. The pursuit that man should have is righteous, godliness, faith, love, patience and meekness. In this life we have all had dreams about our “ship coming in” but it should not be this kind of dream that defines an individual. Living by faith does not mean “just surviving” moment to moment. To walk by faith is a complete dependence upon the Lord Jesus Christ and not on what one possesses. To walk by faith is not relying on yourself but on God. To walk by faith is the wisdom and understanding how to help others with what you have been blessed which will ultimately deposit into the eternal life. It is true that you came into this world naked and when death comes there is nothing you possess in worldly goods that you will carry with you to the other side. When everything comes to an end it is not what you possessed but what you gave away that will define your life. When you add value to someone else’s life than you are rich beyond measure. The blessings of the Lord are not always in the monetary value but the treasures of the heart. Receive your blessings today to add value to someone else and lay up treasures beyond this life.
